    The polarized Gamma-ray Observer (Pogo Lite) is a balloon-borne experiment that will measure the polarization of soft gamma rays in the energy range 25 keV-80 keV. PoGOLite will carry an auroral diagnostics package, ALBERT, to measure the auroral emissions that will enhance the background level.

     Analyses of Building Energy System Alternatives through Transient  Simulation his thesis examines the performance of residential buildings and the energy  systems contained within those buildings by simulating them in the TRaNsient SYstems  Simulation (TRNSYS) program. After matching a building’s floorplan to that of house  local to the College Park area, national and local building surveys were consulted to  produce a prototype of the average Maryland home.




4. ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A SEMI-ACTIVE MUFFLER

    Abstract
In this work, a flow reversal resonator fitted with a short-circuit duct connecting the inlet and outlet is analysed and used as a tuneable muffler element, aimed to be used use in a semi-active muffler on an IC-engine. The work done can be divided into 3 main parts. 1), a study of what type of valve t hat could be used to change the acoustical properties of the short-circuit duct. 2), Design of a flow reversal resonator with a controllable valve as the short-circuit. 3),experimental validation in a flow acoustic test rig.

10. COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN OF SIDE ACTIONS FOR INJECTION MOLDING OF COMPLEX PARTS

Often complex molded parts include undercuts, patches on the part boundaries that are not accessible along the main mold opening directions. Undercuts are molded by incorporating side actions in the molds. Convective Heat Transfer with Nano fluids. The present Master thesis is concerned with forced convection heat transfer in laminar and turbulent flow with Nano fluids. Nano fluids are defined as a colloidal suspension of particles in a base fluid, where the particles have a characteristic length of less than 100 nm. Experiments were conducted to determine the qualification  of  Nano fluids  for  laminar  and  turbulent  flow  forced  convection  heat  transfer.

13. DEMONSTRATING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MICROCLIMATE ON ANNUAL BUILDING ENERGY SIMULATIONS USING RADTHERM


Buildings account for over 35% of the energy demand in OECD countries, making them a prime target for improvement. (EIA 2011) To help building owners reduce energy usage, ratings systems such as LEED have been developed.  A  prerequisite for certification is the demonstration of energy efficiency  through computer  modeling;  however,  the  complex  nature  of  building  energy  simulations  too  often  leads  to errors of up to 30%  (Turner and Frankel 2008).

15. DESIGN OF 120CC SINGLE C CYLINDER EXPERIMENTAL ENGINE FOR ANALYSIS OF INTAKE SWIRL AND MULTIPLE IGNITION SITES.


The intent of this thesis is to design, build, and test a cylinder head with variable swirl and ignition sites. The design aspect used Solid Works Floworks to model airflow within the  head  and  cylinder.  Swirl  rate  and  volumetric  flow  rate  were  calculated  from  the results. Many design iterations took place before asuitable design was accomplished.

16. DESIGN OF A BIAS-WEAVING MACHINE

A machine for producing bias weaves (thick, multiaxial weaves) is presented. It consists of a fill/warp weaving apparatus superimposed on a general braiding machine. The braiding machine consists of a set of moveable columns which hold spools of bias fibers, and a mechanism to shift spools from one column to the next.

A manually operated paper-recycling machine was designed and fabricated. This was done to enable waste paper conversion into useful product. 32. INVESTIGATION OF JP-8 AUTOIGNITION UNDER VITIATED COMBUSTION CONDITIONS

Limited data on jet fuel ignition and oxidation at low-O2, vitiated conditions has  hindered the validation of kinetic models for combustion under such conditions. In this  study, ignition delay time experiments of JP-8 have been performed withvitiated air at low  pressures. Initially, the effects of temperature, equivalence ratio, and mole fractions of  vitiated components on JP-8 ignition at 1 atm were screened to discover that temperature, O2 and NO have the largest significance.



33. INVESTIGATION OF MATERIALS FOR USE IN EXHAUST GAS

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) is a method for reducing NOx emissions for heavy-duty diesel engines. EGR works by introducing part of the exhaust gases back to the engine cylinders. Exhaust gases consists mainly of CO2, NOx , SO2 and H2O. As the temperature decreases, these gases form a corrosive condensate.

36. MARKET ANALYSIS FOR GAS ENGINE TECHNOLOGY IN ALGERIA


The objective of this diploma thesis is to investigate the potential of combined heat and 
power plants based on gas engine technology in Algeria. This market analysis has been performed 
in order to identify the key markets for the newly created French subsidiary of Clarke Energy 
Group to expand its business in North Africa. After analyzing the structure of the Algerian 
energy sector and the potential of each gas engine application, three key sectors were identified.

Many modeling studies have been carried out to simulate the current distribution  across the channel and shoulder direction in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel  cell. However the modeling results do not show agreement on the current density  distribution.

This  project  deals  with  the  potential  of  membrane  stratified  solar  ponds  which  consist  of  two  water  layers,  where  one  is  a  salt  solution  here,  and  a  separating  translucent  membrane.  An  experimental  pond  was  set  up  to  study  the  thermal  behaviour of such collector systems. 


39. MICROTURBOPUMP UTILIZING MICROBALL BEARINGS

This  dissertation  presents  the  development  of  a  microfabricated  turbopump  capable  of  delivering  fuel  with  the  flow  rates  and  pressures  required  for  portable  power generation. The device is composed of a spiral-groove viscous pump that is  driven  by  a  radial  in-flow  air  turbine  and  supported  using  a  novel  encapsulated  microball bearing. 



40. MILITARY AVIATION INCIDENT REPORTING FROM AN HTO PERSPECTIVE

The purpose of this study is to find out if the Swedish Air Force and the military aviation  industry, Saab Aerosystems, use an HTO perspective in incident investigations. The research  objectives are to explore existing organizational and accident models, analyze the reporting  system  using  the  models,  and  suggest  possible  improvements  to  the  existing  incident  investigation system.


41. MODELING OF A SINGLE-PHASE LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM FOR POWER ELECTRONICS APPLICATIONS

This  work  investigates  the  reliability  of  a  single-phase,  liquid  cooling  system  used  for the thermal management of a medium power level converter system. The system  utilizes a plastic insert cold plate design to provide even cooling over the backside of  a  power  electronics  device  by  directing  coolant  through  parallel  serpentine  channels.


42. MODELING OF THE STEAM SYSTEM IN A BWR A MODEL OF RINGHALS 1


A nuclear power plant is a very complex dynamic system with a lot of built in regulators and security systems that make it almost impossible to know by reasoning, exactly how the system dynamics is going to react due to e.g. plant modifications, transients or operator behaviors. A common way to find out is to build a computer model and simulate the system.


43. MULTI-ACTUATOR SWITCH MODE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

Current hydraulic systems involving multiple actuators and a single hydraulic power  supply generally have poor efficiency.  Using throttling valves to control multiple actuators  requires meeting the highest pressure requirement and the total flow of all of actuators. When  there is a large difference in the pressure requirement of the actuators, fluid throttling results in  significant energy losses.

Nanofluidics has been a major field ofresearch for application in areas  like single molecule detection. The understanding of secondary flow behavior has become an important aspect in  the design of modern gas turbines. Secondary flow gives rise to aerodynamic losses,  distorts the thermal field and affects the flow conditions at the exit of a passage  negatively. Therefore, reducing secondary flow is a major concern for efficiency  improvement.  


46. OPTIMIZATION OF MAPUTO POWER PLANT




The Electricidade de Moçambique, E.P. (EDM) is the power utility in Mozambique, responsible 
to generate, transport and distribute electricity all over the country. The company has three gas 
turbines installed at Maputo Power Plant. All units burn diesel oil and are used only for back up. 
Currently only the unit #2 is available for operation.


47. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A SOLAR COOLING SYSTEM




In United Arab Emirates (UAE), a huge proportion of electrical energy consumed in buildings is used to run  air  conditioning  equipments.  This  is  because  UAE’s  climate  is  characterized  by  very high  ambient temperatures and high humidity, especially during summer periods. There is need to promote air conditioning  systems  that  are  run  by  renewable  energy  based  power  because  of  the  environment  threats  and  energy  security  negative  issues  associated  with  conventional  fossil  fuel  –  energy  powered  systems.  


48. PRELIMINARY MISSION ANALYSIS AND DESIGN FOR A SMALL SATELLITE SWARM


The thesis is a preliminary mission analysis and design of a small satellite swarm. The concept of the mission is to probe altitudes between 200 km and 6000 km to study the structures and dynamics of the magnetic field aligned currents. The mission lifetime is about 3 months. Aerodynamic drag at low altitudes is used for orbit and formation control.

51. REPLACEMENT OF AN ELECTRICAL HEATING SYSTEM

The first part of this thesis contains the energy balance for the different kinds of flats to 
see how much energy they consume for heating and hot tap water. To get theses values 
we  have  to  analyse  the  total  energy  flow  into  one  flat  and  compare  it  with  the  energy

With  the  vastness  of  existing  railroad  infrastructure,  there  exist  numerous  road crossings  which  are  lacking  warning  light  systems  and/or  crossing  gates  due  to  their remoteness  from  existing  electrical  infrastructure. Along  with  lacking  warning  light systems, these areas also tend to lack distributed  sensor networks used for railroad track health monitoring applications.

54. SIMULATION AND MODAL ANALYSIS OF INSTABILITY AND TRANSITION IN A STEADY ECCENTRIC STENOTIC FLOW

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of steady ow, with Re = 750 at inlet,through stenosed pipe has been done to study transition and turbulence of theow in the post-stenosis area. The pipe has 75% constriction by area reduction and 5% eccentricity of the main pipe diameter at the throat. A sinusoidal Gaussian force is implemented to keep turbulent in the domain. 



55. SIMULATION OF THERMAL STRESSES IN A DISC BRAKE

The heat flux produced from the friction between a disc and pad system leads to a high temperature which causes thermal stresses in the disc and after a number of repeated  braking  cycles,  cracks  might  be  initiated.  The  finite  element  analysis (FEA)  is  performed  to  determine  the  temperatures  profile  in  the disc and  to analyze the stresses for the repeated braking, which  could be  used  to calculate the 
fatigue life of a disc.


56. SIMULATIONS OF SOUND PROPAGATION AT A DUCT TERMINATION WITH FLOW

Both theoretically as well as in many applications like exhaust systems, ventilation pipes, mufflers, air intakes and also large scale industrial smoke stacks, it is of interest to understand how sound waves are scattered at duct exists.Especially for aeronautical application such as jet engines, the effect of coupling of acoustics and flow on sound radiation and reflection from a duct termination in a uniform is an important problem.

Various solar powered heating systems have been tested extensively, but solar powered air-conditioners have received little more than short-term demonstration attention.This paper reviews past e€orts in the ®eld of solar powered air-conditioning systems with the absorption pair of lithium bromide and water.
